چکیده

The modal formalism is developed to deal with index-modulated structures ended by anisotropic regions (perfectly matched layers, PML). The method is applicable to scattering problems from dielectric or metallic objects as well as to propagation in planar slab waveguides. The boundaryvalue problem is solved and the dispersion relation inside the PML is derived. The general expression of the eigenvalues equation for an arbitrary number of regions and for both polarization modes is obtained. The modal functions of a layer ended by PMLs are found, and their orthogonality relation is derived. The potential of the method to deal with more general problems is briefly outlined.

Eigenmodes of index-modulated layers with lateral PMLs

Maxwell equations are solved in a layer comprising a finite number of homogeneous isotropic dielectric regions ended by anisotropic perfectly matched layers (PMLs). The boundary-value problem is solved and the dispersion relation inside the PML is derived. The general expression of the eigenvalues equation for an arbitrary number of regions in each layer is obtained, and both polarization modes...

Modal expansion for the 2D Green’s function in a non-orthogonal coordinates system

We present an efficient modal method to calculate the two-dimensional Green’s function for electromagnetics in curvilinear coordinates. For this purpose the coordinate transformation based differential method, introduced for the numerical analysis of surface-relief gratings, is directly used with perfectly matched layers (PMLs). The covariant formalism Maxwell’s equations, very convenient for t...

Near- to far-field transformation in the aperiodic Fourier modal method.

This paper addresses the task of obtaining the far-field spectrum for a finite structure given the near-field calculated by the aperiodic Fourier modal method in contrast-field formulation (AFMM-CFF). The AFMM-CFF efficiently calculates the solution to Maxwell's equations for a finite structure by truncating the computational domain with perfectly matched layers (PMLs). However, this limits the...

Remarks on the stability of Cartesian PMLs in corners

This work is a contribution to the understanding of the question of stability of Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs) in corners, at continuous and discrete levels. First, stability results are presented for the Cartesian PMLs associated to a general first-order hyperbolic system. Then, in the context of the pressurevelocity formulation of the acoustic wave propagation, an unsplit PML formulation is...

Perfectly Matched Layers in Negative Index Metamaterials and Plasmas

This work deals with the stability of Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs). The first part is a survey of previous results about the classical PMLs in non-dispersive media (construction and necessary condition of stability). The second part concerns some extensions of these results. We give a new necessary criterion of stability valid for a large class of dispersive models and for more general PMLs ...
